What’s in Bloom?

Winter

While the arboretum might look as though it’s settled in for a long nap, there is quite a bit going on under that white blanket. Shallow roots of evergreens still seek moisture to replenish what is lost to desiccating winds. Toads hibernate beneath piles of leaf litter, while birds that rely on seeds from long gone flowers brighten the sky with movement. Thousands of spring bulbs planted along the entry road wait beneath the soil surface for a warming trend and an early spring boost of sunshine. We wouldn’t enjoy the color of spring half so much if it weren’t for the somber days of winter.
