Most Recent Received: Tourism Promotion Grant

Two Tourism Promotion Grants were awarded to Taltree in December, 2009. The awards, each of $500, will be used to help defray expenses for Art in the Garden and the Music in Nature Concert series.

The Tourism Promotion Grant program was established by the PCCRVC to foster and fund activities, projects, special events, sporting events and programs that promote the development and growth of tourism in Porter County.

Taltree Development Director Melissa Thompson said, “We are extraordinarily pleased to be on the forefront of facilitating expanded tourism in Northwest Indiana and gratefully accept the support from the PCCRVC in order to do so.”

Taltree Arboretum & Gardens has received an $18,000 grant from the Gaylord & Dorothy Donnelley Foundation in April, 2009. Funds were used to conduct a flora survey of Taltree land, which includes woodland, wetland and prairie ecosystems. When completed, Taltree will have a complete inventory of indigenous plants including those that are rare and endangered, giving the arboretum a baseline for conducting future research, conservation, and education programs. Consumers will have access to the survey results via Taltree’s website in order to enhance their visits to Taltree.

Valparaiso Rotary

Valparaiso RotaryThanks to a $5,000 grant from the Valparaiso Rotary, visitors to Taltree are now able to observe the wildlife that frequent the Savanna Wetland. Taltree built this structure in 2009, now offering a full 360° view of various habitats. Since Taltree’s wetland was restored in 1999, the structure overlooks the six-acre complex of shallow and deep water, peninsula, and island - home to a large number of fish, amphibians, birds, mammals, and insects.

PCMG GrantPorter County Master Gardeners

Porter County Master Gardeners awarded us $500 in the Fall, 2008, for the purchase of a new laptop computer for Taltree's education programs. With Taltree education offerings greater than ever, this gift now gives instructors new and relieable equipment for their classes and provides an opportunity for us to reach out beyond our walls to provide classes and services to other organizations.
