1. Entrance Gate House

This gatehouse welcomes guests to Taltree.

2. Welcome Garden

This garden greets arriving visitors and is home to a collection of perennial and woody plants.

3. Audrey M. & Leonard J. Hitz Family Rose Garden

Enjoy the scents, sounds, colors and textures of this special garden, with its massive granite blocks, bluestone patio, pool and vibrant roses from late spring through early fall.

4. Joseph E. Meyer Memorial Pavilion

Serves as staging point for tours, seminars and retreats. It is also available for special functions such as weddings, family reunions and club meetings. The site of Taltree’s musical events, the pavilion has exceptional acoustics and its unique design provides visitors protection while enjoying sights, sounds, and smells of nature. Discover the multi-sensory treats that await you.

5. Heron Pond

View the sun-sparkled waters that are home to Little Green Herons while relaxing on the pavilion lawn.

6. Heron Pond Woodlands

Experience mature oaks and hickories in a serene Midwest woodland. Breath in its sense of permenance.

7. Buttonbush Swamp

Get a glimpse of wetland species that make this area home.

8. Oak Islands

Discover the wide array of oak species from around the world and the plant communities that surround them.

9. Native Plant Garden

Survey the pastoral display of hundreds of plants that are native to eastern North America.

10. Window on the Wetland Pergola

Take a seat and go back in time to experience nature in a restored Savanna Wetland, where the natural grasses and wildflowers area habitat for birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles and insects.

11. Prairie and Oak Savanna

Explore the largest portion of the arboretum, dedicated to prairie and oak savanna that is a quiet habitat for thousands of native plants and animals.

12. Reforestation

Walk along former agricultural land planted with oaks and hickories in 1998. Observe changes as the years go by.

13. Council Oak

Sit and relax under a multi-trunk bur oak with a large-spreading canopy. Melt into its protection.

14. Savanna Wetland Overlook/Kiosk

Rest in the shade while enjoying the view, a picnic lunch and additional insights offered by an information kiosk.

15. Signature Tree

This bur oak is the model for the Taltree logo.

16. Railway Garden Depot Building

200 years of railway history winds through a fabulous landscape of dwarf conifers and plants. Exhibit will open in 2011.

17. Field Nursery

Temporary home for young specimen trees.
