Pheasant Trail leads out to the recently developed American Woodcock Refuge and Pheasant habitat, located in the easternmost section of the property. Begin your journey at the Depot and head out on the Bluebird Trail about ¼ mile before taking the left fork. Continue to the four-way stop where you’ll need to turn left again until you reach the trail marker for Woodcock Trail. After a brief walk through a canopy of mature oaks, the grassy trail opens into a wide prairie. Listen for the rustle and chatter of small animals in the deep prairie grasses. In late summer, enjoy the brightness of Queen Ann’s Lace and black-eyed Susans against a background of subtle shades of green. Don’t forget to watch for dragonflies flitting above you.
For the more adventurous, shortly after you reach the east boundary of Arboretum, you’ll find the trailhead for the Woodcock Trail. Otherwise, the trail loops back to its start.
